The Firebird

This is a piece I did for more Slavic folklore series!

 

The Firebird is a magical bird from Slavic folklore vaguely similar to a Phoenix. It's known for its brilliant, glowing feathers in shades of red, orange, and gold. If a feather is removed from the bird, the feather continues to shine, bright enough to light an entire room! In many images, the Firebird appears as a fiery falcon-like bird with a crest and shining tail feathers. It is breathtakingly beautiful, but also dangerous and mysterious.

There are many stories involving the firebird. One of them tells of Maryushka, a kind orphan girl renowned for her beautiful embroidery. Many people admire her work and offer her jobs far afield, but she refuses to leave her home village. When Koschei, the Immortal god of death, hears of her talent, he becomes jealous of a mortal that can create something even more beautiful than his own treasures. He offers to make Maryushka a queen, and upon her refusal,  he transforms her into a Firebird and carries her away as a great black falcon.

 

As she is taken away, Maryushka scatters her glowing feathers over the land so her village will remember her. The feathers remained magical, revealing their colors only to those who love beauty and create it for others.
